About publishing on the Internet

The blog and ePortfolio allow you to publish content on the Internet. With the Internet, "publishing" has taken on a new meaning. You should be aware that content you publish on the Internet can be viewed by virtually any person with a computer and an Internet connection. Here are a few points you may want to consider before you click the Publish button.

Personal information

You should avoid giving away too much personal information. Phone numbers, home addresses and similar can be used to trace you. It is especially important that children not publish their contact information.

Can the content you publish affect you in later life?

Yes it can. According to dagbladet.no, almost 8 out of 10 employers use google.com to search for the names of job applicants. In 35 % of the instances, information that was available on the Internet was enough to make the employers throw the CV and application in the trash can.

You should be careful about what you publish on the Internet. If you write negative comments in blogs or discussion forums, this may be traced back to you. Outsiders may not pick up the intended irony of your Internet entries, and take them as an indication of your personality or opinions. It is recommended to search for your own name on the Internet regularly. By doing this, you are informed about what information is circulating about you on the Internet. Remember, the real art of publishing is deciding what not to publish.
